AKCSE Research Competition for Undergraduate Students 2010

The competition aims to introduce inexperienced undergraduate science and engineering students to scientific research while aiding the more experienced students in their preparation to graduate/professional schools.

Teams and/or individual competition finalists will be given 10 mins to present a review/analysis on a topic of their choice. Applicants are given an occasion to read up on a topic of curiosity beyond the classroom and an opportunity to network with professionals from various fields of research, thus strengthening both academic ideal and networking ability.

AKCSE Research Competition for Undergraduate Students will be held on Mar 19, 2010 at UBC.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

Any undergraduate student who is enrolled in a post-secondary education program is eligible. No previous research experience is required as this competition encourages the introduction of research to inexperienced, but enthusiastic and passionate students who are interested in a potential career in scientific research. An advanced knowledge in the field is not necessary as publication quality presentations are not expected. Commitment to the project is crucial however since only a limited number of students will move on to the finals to present their research due to time limitations.

How to Apply?

Teams and/or individual students who are interested in entering the competition will first apply by email (AKCSE.RESEARCH@gmail.com). They will then be asked to complete an application form which includes a brief abstract (research topic, hypothesis) to be submitted in three-hundred words or less. The abstract serves as an indication of the project’s direction.  The article reviews (experimental data and analysis) is not expected to be completed for the application purpose.

Students are required to apply with an application form by Jan 25 (MON) 9:00 AM, 2010.

In order to apply, a $10 application fee is required. This application fee will also ensure membership into AMS AKCSE UBC or AKCSE SFU. Students who already have a membership will not be charged the application fee.

Topics for the Presentation

Students may choose any topic of interest related to science and engineering. This competition aims to allow students to investigate on a topic of curiosity beyond what is learned in the classroom.

Topics studied from directed studies, co-op, work study/work learn and the academic curriculum may be re-visited so as long as the student’s passion lies on that topic and the format of the work is modified into the format required by the AKCSE Research Competition for Undergraduate Students.

Content for the Presentation

Applicants will perform a literature search on a specific topic and may provide the following for their 1o min presentation:

w  Introduction/Background (including Purpose/Applicative Relevance of Current Research)

w  Hypothesis

w  Collection of Data from Previous Experiments

w  Conclusion

w  Future Research Direction Suggestions

The following requirements serve as a general template for presentational content but there is flexibility depending on each applicant’s needs.

No more than 10 PowerPoint slides should be required although students won’t be limited as long as they are able to finish the presentation in the time allotted.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence. No plagiarism will be tolerated.

Awards

Based on their enthusiasm, potential, and effort, an AKCSE Research Competition Scholarship is given at a sum of $1,000, $500, and $300 (CAD) for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place competition winners, respectively. The Scholarship can be received in cash sum, or alternatively, it can be offered to a potential employer as salary.
